The Singing Fish

The Scrupulous Mid-Wife

- Douglas McDowell
T housands of years ago in the most wondrous province of Toobuku lived a beauteous mid-wife named Qok Roksu.

Now one day this mid-wife received an invitation from the celestial and wondrous emperor to be mid-wife to the Empress Kansatsushee. And so she sold all her possessions to provide for the long journey.

No sooner had she stepped out the door than she realized it was a trap. Jake was waiting for her and he had brought Tater with him. There was no where to hide, but just when things looked hopeless the Singing Fish came riding into town astride his fiery sea-horse.

"This province is of insufficient magnitude to accommodate the both of us!", he declared, trampling Tater beneath the stampeding sea-horse.

"Praise Fu Buk Won!", Jake screamed inexplicably as he was transformed into a most radiant cherry tree.

And so the mid-wife continued on to a new life surrounded by ungrateful courtesans.
